CHARLOTTE, NC, March 9, 2022 /CSRwire/ — The Trust announced today that it has awarded a $10 million grant to Connect Humanity, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing digital justice among historically marginalized communities. The grant will be used to advance Connect Humanity’s existing efforts to provide funding, tools, training, and network building to bridge the digital divide. As more organizations and individuals fully adopt digital remote work, the digital divide continues to widen, and the barriers to entry are deepening because of it. The Trust Scholarship is an opportunity to enhance the online space and provide affordable and accessible training and networking to offline communities.
“Following previous grants and partnerships with organizations like the Internet Society, the Trust recognizes the commitment required to close this digital divide. So, in addition to providing this $10 million grant, we have also created an ongoing partnership with Connect Humanity to end this systemic injustice and allow communities to stabilize the economy. digital, revitalizing it, and preparing for its future. From Troist Foundation. “This active partnership brings the best in philanthropy and funding to this cause, providing disadvantaged and marginalized communities with access and training in broadband technology, which in many ways is a fundamental human right given our growing digital world.”
More than 30% of African Americans, Hispanics, and rural residents are not online. With the increase in remote jobs and new jobs posted almost exclusively online, it’s hard to imagine the success of a modern business without building a website or applying for loans and permits online. In the end, the digital economy exists only for those associated with it. And disproportionately, low-income families, rural residents, and communities of color have been left behind.
This grant will help lay the foundation for Connect Humanity’s plan to expand existing models that increase local ownership of the Internet within communities. As a result, the communities supported by this investment will experience high-speed, lower-priced Internet, and local ownership and operation will ensure that the network benefits the community, expanding economic opportunities for all.
“We are committed to ensuring that communities have the resources they need to break out of digital poverty and achieve digital justice,” said Chris Warman, Co-Founder and Head of Partnership and Strategy at Connect Humanity. “This grant allows us to start partnerships that have the potential to support at least 100 communities, improve connectivity for at least 5 million historically unconnected Americans and stimulate nearly $500 million in economic opportunity; while creating at least 1,000 jobs in Network engineering and maintenance.
Additionally, through this grant, Connect Humanity will invest in building the skills of low-income communities to help them create and operate their own infrastructure, thereby creating economic opportunity and mobility. This comprehensive approach focusing on infrastructure, affordability, digital skills, content and policy changes will help bridge the digital divide.
