Send money and pay bills via missed calls; 4 ways to use a new feature without the Internet

To bring thousands of feature phone users to the digital payment system, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently unveiled UPI 123Pay. Described as a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for feature phones, the new payment mode will allow individuals to make instant payments without smartphones or internet connections. Experts believe this game-changing move is aimed at democratizing the way India does business.

The Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, has emerged as the most widely used digital payment method in recent years. With the launch of UPI 123Pay, around 40 crore feature phone users will be able to participate in the digital payment system in a secure manner.

What is UPI 123Pay?

Simply put, UPI 123Pay allows individuals to send money or make other financial transactions via feature phones. The system does not need an internet connection to send or receive money. Users can follow an easy three-step method to initiate and execute UPI transactions. “UPI 123Pay aims to enable more people to have an internal digital experience through feature phones,” RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said while launching this new initiative.

How to use UPI 123Pay for feature phones

With UPI 123Pay, users no longer need a smartphone or internet connection to make Unified Payments Interface payments. Customers just need to link their feature phone bank account with their debit card details to use the UPI service. Feature phone users can transact in four different ways – missed calls, app-based functions, interactive voice response or IVR and approximate voice-based payments. Let’s take a look at how these methods work

Authenticate the transaction by entering a UPI PIN to complete the transaction.

App-based UPI 123Pay: An application will be installed on the feature phone with which customers can use various functions of the UPI. Except for scanning and payment features, all other functions of UPI payments will be available for feature phone users.

Interactive Voice Response (IVR): To initiate a UPI payment via IVR, users are required to initiate a secure call from their feature phone to a pre-defined number. Once they have completed the UPI entry procedures, they will be able to start making financial transactions without an internet connection.

Near Voice Based Payments: This uses sound waves to enable offline, offline and proximity data communication on any device, RBI said.
