Owl photos flood the Internet before the Super Bowl. Here’s why

(CNN) – A wonderful owl. Don’t wait, Super Bowl.

Too late.

In place of the Super Bowl information, a little misspelling occurred later and the search results were populated with owl content instead. We would encourage you to make mistakes. Because owls are really “fantastic”.

These birds are far from football, but over the years this trend has gained great popularity. So much so that a lot of people flood the internet with pre-Super Bowl albums every year. (And you know what a pool of owls is called, right? Parliament).

This internet phenomenon puts these feathered creatures in the spotlight, ultimately aiding awareness, said Matt Williams, director of conservation at the Indiana chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

“I would say anything that helps get the message across about the importance of conservation is a good thing,” he said.

cold stone predator

Owls are very interesting. Some people think they are innocent balls of fluff, Williams said, but that could not be further from the truth.

“Owls are voracious predators that hunt mostly at night using their keen sense of hearing to help locate their prey,” he said in an email.

Williams explained that their disc-shaped face directs sound to their ears, allowing them to hear the quietest sounds. He added that their feathers are designed to make them completely silent when they fly, a useful trick for sneaking up on their prey.

Most owls feed only on small mammals such as mice and shrews, said Seth Magel, director of the Urban Wildlife Institute at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo.

Some larger owls, such as the great-horned owl, Williams said, can snatch away rabbits, skunks, or even other owls.

Super bowl owl mascots

Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals may already have their own mascots, but there’s no harm in adding a few owls to the mix.

Williams thought the barred owl could represent the Bengal because the birds shared a stripe pattern similar to the team’s helmets.

“For the Rams, I have to say the Snowy Owl of Harry Potter fame because quarterback Matthew Stafford has been a magician during the playoff so far,” he explained.

Muggle assigned the eastern screaming owl to the Bengals because they are found in Ohio and share a similar team coloration.

He added that the California spotted owl fits well with rams.

“It has a four-note call sometimes described as ‘hup, hoo-hoo, hooo,’ which sounds like it could be audible at the line of scrimmage,” Magley said.

See an owl in the wild

Your experience with owls is not limited to the Internet. Communities across the United States host educational events about nocturnal animals that include a nature walk.

The Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, presented a special event for the adorable owl this Saturday at the Super Bowl weekend.

The Leslie Center for Science and Nature in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will host an event about the owl on Sunday morning. The center will have resident owls on display, and people can dissect owl pellets, which are the undigested parts of their meal that they vomit.

Why not venture outside this weekend so you can learn about these amazing creatures? will be a shout out.

Now meet some awesome owls

There are over 250 species of owl, and we’d like to introduce you to some of our favorites.

Many people think that all owls make screeching noises, but this is not the case. The great gray owl does not scream, Williams said, but rather makes a series of “whistles” in a low tone.

The short-eared owl can be found in prairies and wetlands, Williams said, unlike most other woodland owls.

Barred owls are very noisy birds that can often be heard making traditional hunter noises, said Charles Eldermayer, head of the Bird Cams Project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Eldermeer said that great-horned owls are known for their distinctive ear tufts and cat-like eyes. You can watch the events in the nest of a large pair of horned owls near Savannah, Georgia, on live cam.

The burrowing owl lives its life unlike most owls. Magley said that instead of being active at night and living in trees, he spends the day awake and makes his home on the ground.
