The Verizon Movers study, based on a Morning Consult survey of US residents who have recently moved, shows that more than half of those who move would like to live in an area with better infrastructure for fast home and cellular internet.

Who is moving in the US and why

A survey of new movers in the US reveals:

  • Seven out of ten new operators say broadband internet access was a significant factor in their search for their home after deciding to move and more than half say access to 5G was a significant factor.

  • Those who have moved are more likely now than they were before they moved to own and live in a single-family home.

  • Among US adults who moved within the last 18 months, 44% reported living in a home, apartment or condo they owned, which is an 8-point increase compared to 36% who owned their home before their last move.

  • A slight majority of new movers (51%) say they currently live in a single-family home, which is a 5-point increase from 46% who lived in a single-family home before their last move.

  • Three out of four operators remained within their state but those working in a hybrid or remote format were more likely to relocate than those working in-person (31% vs. 18%).

  • More than half of new movers wanted to live in an area with better fast home internet infrastructure (52%) and reliable cellular service (54%).

  • 34% of study participants said it took more than two hours to install a new broadband connection.

Mover Survey Methodology: This survey was conducted between December 14, 2021 and January 5, 2022, among a national sample of 1,000 US adults who moved within the past 18 months. Interviews were conducted online and data were weighted to approximate a target sample based on age, gender, race/ethnicity, region, and educational attainment.
