Wemax Dice is a small, convenient and lightweight projector that can be used to present from your Mac, but is better used as a TV.

Like the Wemax Nova projector before it, the Wemax Dice is built on Android, and this brings some issues for Apple users.

For example, there’s no point in streaming to it from your iPhone, and you also can’t use your iPhone to speed up the process of setting it up with your Wi-Fi credentials. However, setup is simple, and you can connect your Mac or Apple TV to Wemax Dice and present with that.

What the dice offer compared to other projectors is a kind of rugged portability. It’s a battery-powered projector, although it can be operated while plugged into an electrical outlet, and everything about it is meant to make it fast and convenient to use.

Build quality and design

The Wemax Dice is easy to carry, complete with a carrying strap, but is also squat and sturdy enough that you’ll never knock it over by accident. It weighs 4.8 pounds, 0.1 pounds more than the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

It appears to be heavier, as this cube-shaped weight is 6.10″ wide x 4.9″ x 6.30″ wide. Instead of being heavy, it looks sturdy.

You still need to take care of it, but you won’t have any discomfort throwing it in the trunk or using it in almost any environment. You may forget to pack it away, but you won’t hesitate to run it in a windy area.

However, there are environments in which it works better than others.

Best and worst operating environments

Wemax Dice sounds like something you’ll want to use outside, perhaps on a camping trip. It is more or less the right size for it, in addition, it has a battery, so it is not necessary to keep it in offices and rooms with power outlets.

Wemax quotes two to three hours of battery life, so I assume it will work for a medium-length movie. If you watch any Marvel saga, it has DC inputs, so you just need to find an extension bar.

With a brightness of 700 ANSI lumens, it must be night before there is perfect lighting outside for viewing. Camel Tried dropping it on a garden fence, and it was surprisingly good even on this kind of broken roof, but only when it was late in the evening.

In this case, we expected far beyond what Wemax recommends. The project was designed to cast an image of about 10.5 feet, and we went about double.

There isn’t a chance you’ll be sitting comfortably and watching a movie at that distance, but what it does easily is make a video wall off the fence. For an evening party out, where you won’t focus on the movie or the presentation, it makes a bright and fun regimen.

To actually watch something, to properly enjoy a YouTube video or an Amazon Prime movie, you need a clear wall, and to keep it about 10 feet from the projector. At this distance, it has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1 for a screen size that ranges from 48 inches to 120 inches.

When you move the projector, it switches to autofocus mode and recalibrates the display to provide the best possible picture.

It’s fast and good enough that you won’t want to adjust the focus yourself. You may want to not hold down the table you placed the projector on, as autofocus will interrupt any video playback.

As for the sound, the Wemax Dice internal speakers may be enough. It’s mono, so you may want to pair your monitor with separate Bluetooth speakers instead.

Unlike some other projectors, the Wemax Dice comes without adjustable legs. The projector cannot be tilted directly without placing something under it.

However, it does come with a stand for a standard tripod. So it can be raised on one of those, and the tripod head can be adjusted to focus the beam where you want it.

Present from your Mac or Apple TV

Wemax Dice comes with an HDMI port. Connect your MacBook Pro or Apple TV to that, and you can choose Dice’s Source menu to select your device.

The MacBook Pro counts the Wemax Dice display as a second screen when you do this. It also changes the resolution of its main solution, making everything very small.

So it’s best to find and open your video on your Mac before connecting to a Dice projector.

Then the video immediately plays, but the audio does not. You have to go separately to Macs System Preferencesthen choose soundAnd production |. Select the dice from the list of possible audio outputs, and all audio will be routed through the display device.

If you’re on an Apple TV and plan to show a Keynote presentation instead of playing a video, you need an extra step. You will have to use AirPlay to stream from your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV.

Using Wemax Dice as a TV

Point the Wemax Dice against a wall, or a hedge that is better kept, and you can watch TV video without anything other than being connected to the Internet. It comes with YouTube and Amazon Prime built in, and through the Google Play Store, you can add more.

Notably, it does not include Netflix. However, in addition to the HDMI port, the Dice has a USB-A port, so you can plug in an Amazon Fire Stick, or similar, to get Netflix.

Any display device built on Android will be less useful to an iPhone user. And dragging your MacBook around is much less convenient than being able to stream from your phone.

However, the Wemax Dice is a solid, robust and good quality projector. What you lose in brightness compared to other large projectors, you gain in battery-powered portability.

  • Strongly portable
  • Battery lasts at least 2 hours
  • Excellent autofocus
  • HDMI port means you can connect MacBook Pro and Apple TV
  • Since it is designed for Android users, streaming from iPhone is not practical
  • Built-in features do not include Netflix

Where do I buy?

Wemax Dice retails for $700, but is usually available on Amazon for about $535.
