A note on why you should buy a 2022 phone if you have an AT&T
Before we get into the actual hardware, it’s worth quickly mentioning why with AT&T in particular you should be looking for a 2022 device: 5G support and long installment terms.
AT&T is preparing for a major upgrade of 5G networks in the second half of the year that is supposed to significantly boost its services using what’s known as mid-band spectrum. The carrier plans to cover 200 million people with its mid-range networks by the end of next year, and download speeds are routinely expected to reach several hundred megabits per second, with a peak of 1 gigabit per second.
There are two types of mid-band spectrum that AT&T is focusing on, known as the C-band and 3.45GHz. The first is what Verizon and AT&T have already started rolling out and is often used in 5G internationally, making it easier to find and enable it in a number of phones already available such as the Samsung Galaxy S21, iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and Google Pixel 6. The carrier already has.
However, the 3.45GHz spectrum is not common in phones today and AT&T has not committed to upgrading previous hardware to support this network. (Mixing matters even more confusing is that AT&T is promoting both its mid-band flavors, as well as its millimeter wave network, as “5G Plus”.)
