AyaNeo NEXT delivers gaming laptop gaming at 100fps

When we first saw Steam Deck in July of 2021, it was amazing to be able to achieve console-level performance with PC games in a handheld system. Well, AyaNeo aims to take on Steam Deck with its NEXT Advance mobile games, which launched at CES 2022 this year. The AyaNeo NEXT Advance isn’t waiting for AMD’s 6000-series APUs to drop later this year, but instead takes advantage of a current-generation Ryzen 7 5800U processor with up to 16GB of RAM and 2TB of internal storage. That’s a great spec for this little device, given that Steam Deck is still slated to use a Zen 2 processor, not Zen 3. What else does AyaNeo offer? Let’s take a closer look below.

AyaNeo takes advantage of AMD’s Zen 3 architecture in its NEXT Advance console

When it comes to gaming performance, at this point it’s hard to argue with AMD’s dominance in the space. Intel is making strong swings with its 12th-generation processors, but AMD is firmly on the front line when it comes to APU performance as we saw in our Ryzen 5 5600G hands-on.

For this reason, AyaNeo chooses AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 5800U Zen 3-based APU for its NEXT Advance console. This puts it ahead of the Steam Deck platform, which is still set to use Valve’s previous generation Zen 2 lineup of handheld gaming system. Curious how the AyaNeo NEXT Advance looks like? Well, in the “for reference only” graph, Forza Horizon 5 hit around 42 fps on high settings and 67 fps on medium, while GTA V managed to hit 102 fps on low settings. Those numbers are impressive for a system as compact as this fully portable, and should offer a solid experience across the board for those who want to play on the go.

The AyaNeo NEXT Advance is also the “first controller” to use “Hall sensors on the control arms and catalysts”. This addition provides fewer hardware components which results in less wear over time, helping to solve the drift problem that many control arms experience. The thumb sticks also feature a modular, removable design, this way you can customize the feel to your liking depending on what fits your fingers best. You’ll also find that the power button has a built-in fingerprint reader for quick and easy unlocking, making operating the system a breeze.

For the screen, the AyaNeo used a 7-inch IPS panel with a pixel density of 215PPI, about half that of the iPhone and closer to the Switch in terms of resolution. When it comes to storage, AyaNeo NEXT Advance makes use of M.2 NVMe SSDs to provide up to 2TB of available space. On the connectivity side, you’ll find Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 together to deliver the best possible performance out there. Of course, not to be outdone, the AyaNeo NEXT Advance also features 16GB LPDDR4x memory clocked at 4266MHz allowing the Zen 3 processor to run at peak performance.

Continuing, the AyaNeo has a 47Wh battery that the company claims can last between two to six hours on a full charge, and it backs up using a 60W USB-C PD, which means any of your current Type C chargers have a wattage Adequate will work with NEXT Advance. If you want more details about battery life, GTA V will last about two hours while Hollow Knight can run for four hours and Celeste will last six hours, on average according to the company.

You can also dock the AyaNeo NEXT Advance on a desk to use a full-size keyboard, mouse, and monitor to play your favorite games, making it a very portable computer as well as a gaming system. All of this combine to deliver a powerful experience everywhere, as long as AyaNeo NEXT Advance meets the company’s demands.

Joining the AyaNeo NEXT Advance are the NEXT and NEXT Pro as well, all of which use AMD Zen 3 processors with eight cores, 16 threads, and Vega 8 GPUs. The only thing to keep in mind is that the AyaNeo NEXT Advance will cost significantly more than Steam Deck, as Comes in 1345 USD. We don’t yet know exactly how much the NEXT or NEXT Pro will cost, so be sure to keep an eye out for more information there. Shipping is due to begin towards the end of February, and pre-orders are now open.

Sure, this isn’t portable, but with services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, Rainway, or others, you can easily use your phone as a portable solution.

I see the AyaNeo NEXT Advance as more of a collector’s item than a true mobile gaming solution for the masses, given its price and performance metrics we’re seeing now. Only time will tell, and I can’t wait to see this system in the wild to see if it meets the performance metrics that AyaNeo claims.
